Monitoring urged for barristers
BY FRANCES GIBB, LEGAL CORRESPONDENT
THE performance of barristers in court should be monitored by their colleagues as part of a radical package of reforms urged today to eliminate incompetence.
There should also be rules to stop young barristers taking on cases for which they do not have experience; and all barristers should undergo career-long refresher courses to ensure they are up to scratch.
The report, on education and training for the Bar in the future, has been drawn up by a committee of judges, lawyers, non-lawyers and academics under Sir John Collyear, chairman of USM Texon and fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. In his foreword, Sir John accepts that the idea of lifelong training for barristers is controversial.
Sir John said: "To some, this will be seen as going against the culture of the Bar, but it must be recognised that there is a growing expectation on the part of the general public that such procedures should be adopted by all professions."
