The Cost of Criminal Justice
Court proceedings cost on average £2,700 per person according to new Home Office research published today.
"The Cost of Criminal Justice" Home Office Research Findings No.103, a Section 95 publication, for the first time puts a price on court proceedings.
The key findings are:
- magistrates' court proceedings cost on average £550;
- an average magistrates court sentence costs £250 although
sentences imposed at magistrates courts cost £4,950 on average;
- on average Crown Court proceedings cost £8,600;
- the average cost of a Crown Court sentence is £23,900 while
the
average cost of a prison sentence imposed is £30,500; and
- the average cost per person proceeded against in all courts
including sentence is £2,700.

Under Section 95 of the Criminal Justice Act 1991 the Secretary of State shall publish information which enables people engaged in the administration of justice to become aware of the financial implications of their decisions; or which aids those people in avoiding discriminating on the grounds of race or sex or any other improper ground.
