Magistrate fears 'white justice'
White, middle-class male justice would result if the lay magistracy were replaced by professional judges, Harry Mawdsley, the chairman of the Magistrates' Association, said this weekend. He said that despite its image in the media, the magistracy's strength was its diversity. If it were to be replaced, which has been threatened in some quarters of Whitehall, it would be by stipendiaries or district judges. The result would be "institutionalised justice provided by white, middle-class, predominantly males, who sit on their own".
