ILEX Part II Law of Contract Assignment 2
Task
Arnold was an electrician. He was friends with Betty. Betty wished to have her house rewired. Arnold offered to do the work for her. When he had finished, Betty told Arnold that she would pay him £500 for doing the rewiring.
Arnold owed Ken £1,000. He paid Ken £500 and agreed with him that, in full satisfaction of the debt, he (Arnold), would work for Charles who, in return for Arnold's work, would design a new logo for Ken's business.
Arnold then agreed with Charles that if Charles designed a logo for Ken's business, Arnold would install floodlighting to Charles' large country mansion. Arnold installed the floodlighting. Charles failed to design the logo.
Betty and Charles now claim that Arnold's work was faulty. Advise Arnold:
(a) what sum (if any ) he may successfully claim from Betty, who has so far
paid him nothing;
(b) of his liability to Ken; and
(c) of any remedies he may seek against Charles.
