Lawyer 'in legal aid fraud'

A SOLICITOR and two consultants used the legal aid system as a "licence to print money" and fraudulently claimed £2.25 million in a year, a court heard.
In just two years, the value of legal aid work carried out by Alan Pritchard's Birmingham firm mushroomed from £35,000.
Mr Pritchard teamed up with Peter Lane and Brian O'Connor to set up a "mass production line" churning out bogus applications to claim cash, it was alleged.
The conspirators "lied" to the Legal Aid Board by submitting claims for work that was not carried out or claimed for more work than was actually done, Melbourne Inman QC, for the prosecution, said.
Mr Pritchard, 53, of College Road, New Oscott, Birmingham; Mr Lane, 56, of Wast Hills Lane, Hopwood, Worcestershire, and Mr O'Connor, 40, of Buttons Farm Road, Penn, Wolverhampton, deny conspiracy to defraud. The trial continues.
