HEADLINE: GINGER BOTTLE IS TOP OF THE POPS
BODY:
A COLLECTOR is scouring Scotland for a ginger beer bottle which made legal history 77 years ago.
Former cop Trevor Morley, of New Zealand, has contacted junk shops - and the Daily Record - in the hope of collaring one after being fascinated by the story.
And last night, he said: "Perhaps a reader has one lying about."
The bottle entered legal folklore when housewife May Donoghue found a dead snail in her ginger beer in a Paisley cafe in 1928.
She claimed it made her ill and sued soft drinks maker David Stevenson, of Glen Lane, Paisley.
She was awarded pounds 200, the equivalent of pounds 7500 today The case, which eventually finished up in the House of Lords, made legal history and established that all manufacturers have a "duty of care" and could be sued for negligence.
Even today Donoghue v Stevenson is the starting point for countless damages actions.
Trevor said: "If you stop any civil lawyer in the street and ask them about Donoghue v Stevenson, he'll know exactly which case you mean.
"To be able to find the same sort of bottle as Mrs Donoghue found her snail in would be tremendous. A little piece of history."
The only known brown Stevenson ginger beer bottle is believed to be in the possession of a Canadian collector.
But Trevor said: "I'll keep trying. I enjoy the chase
