Introduction

Terrorism has been a prominent feature in the United States as well as in other countries. Throughout the years from 1988 to 1998, there was a notable growth in a kind of new terrorism and new terrorist organizations. With the increased terrorism, the role and responsibilities of the enforcement officers have also changed (The 9/11 Commission Report, 2008). They are asked to focus on investigative and patrol duties. Their roles have been expanded and they are asked to be stricter in term of the attacks. They have to analyze the different situations and take immediate, effectual and reasonable actions to prevent injury, loss of life, or destruction of property.

Unconventional task

The unconventional task related to terrorism includes the expansive investigative duties and the increased domain area. The officers have to be very alert in terms of investigation, review and assessment. They have to use appropriate defensive as well as justificative techniques like firearms, police baton, chemical agents and restraint devices like handcuffs effectively and in accordance with the policies and the laws (Role of the Enforcement Officer, 2008). They have to work tactfully and efficaciously with a diverse community of racial, ethnic, and economic groups. They have to refrain from expressing prejudices toward any group of people (Role of the Enforcement Officer, 2008). They have to increase the domain area where they are currently working because terrorism has also increased globally, so it is important for them to be vigilant; they have to increase the vision and the way they conduct their responsibility. There priority is to cooperate with the attorneys of district and federal authorities of different countries (Role of the Enforcement Officer, 2008).

Role and responsibility of law enforcement officers

Law enforcement officers can play multiple roles for safeguarding the people. The demand of a law enforcement department and the level of participation departments can differ from community to community. Law enforcement resources must be reserved for situations. Their prime job is to provide safety and security to people (McKeever, 2003).

Their domestic role is to conduct investigations and protective responsibilities for the State. They can play an important role by countering terrorism overseas. Their task is to maintain solid working relationships with foreign police and security services across the globe (McKeever, 2003). As a result, the law enforcement and security arm of the department can truly become global. Their task is to design several programs in order to deter or prevent future terrorist activities as well as promote cooperation beyond borders. Homeland security and border protection have been placed as the top priority of the officers on terrorism.

Conclusion

Terrorism has changed in scope as well as in degree. The objectives of terrorism– (those which are related to the short-term outcomes) have changed slightly. The activities of the terrorists seem to have become consistent with this changed focus. In combination with the increased interest of the terrorists in weapons of mass destruction, the focus on the law enforcement officers have also increased. Their duties and responsibilities have also increased (The 9/11 Commission Report, 2008).
