Graham Turnbull Essay Competition The Trainee Solicitors Group (TSG) and the Young Solicitors Group (YSG), in association with the International Human Rights Committee of the Law Society is running the annual human rights essay competition for law students and young lawyers in or from England and Wales. To enter, please submit an essay that answers the question Why must human rights be protected by the rule of law? The competition is open to all law students, members of the TSG and YSG and barristers of less than seven years' call at the closing date in or from England and Wales. Entries, a maximum of 2,000 words in length (including footnotes) should reach the address below by 6pm on Friday 2 February 2007 together with proof of eligibility. (Please see website for eligibility and guidance details). The author of the winning essay will be awarded a prize of £500, funded from the Graham Turnbull Memorial Fund. The runner-up will be awarded book tokens to the value of £250, kindly donated by LexisNexis Butterworths. The Clive M. Schmitthoff Essay Competition: Eligibility: Any student at any institute of higher learning anywhere in the world. Subject: Any topic related to the CISG or UNIDROIT Principles or the PECL. Length & format: Student's choice. Submission of essays as e-mail attachments is satisfactory and encouraged. Awards: A prize of $5,000 will be awarded for the best essay. If this essay is not published elsewhere, the Pace Institute will arrange for its publication. For all essays of special merit, the author and faculty member under whom the student studied will each receive a Certificate of Merit. Are our extradition laws fair?
That's the subject of this year's Times/One Essex Court essay competition, and there's £10,000 up for grabs. Write no more than 1,000 words on Extradition to foreign courts: are our laws fair? Richmond University - American Law Essay Catalogue

Andrew Lees Prize | UK Environmental Law Association
This is an annual essay competition, open to any student, trainee solicitor, pupil or solicitor / barrister who has not more than 2 years post qualification experience. Each winner receives a cash prize and travel and entry to UKELA's annual conference. Commiserations to those who were not successful.

UK Centre for Legal Education
General legal education awareness competition with smaller prizes (2006 prizes were 1st: £250, 2nd: £75 and 3rd: £50)

American Law (only) Essay Competitions (these are not generally open to British Students)

AJA
The American Judges Association (AJA) annual essay competition is open to all full-time law students enrolled in and attending an accredited law school in the United States or Canada. The first prize for the contest is $3,000; second is $1,500; and third is $1,000. First, second, and third place winners and their law schools will be presented with an award certificate. The winning essay will be published in AJA's journal, Court Review. We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the National Court Reporters Association.

Boskey ADR Writing Competition
The purpose of the competition is to promote greater interest in and understanding of the field of dispute resolution and collaborative decision-making among students enrolled in ABA accredited law schools and also graduate programs in the United States and abroad. The essay may address any aspect of dispute resolution practice, theory or research that the contestant chooses. Essays are limited to 15-20 typewritten pages, including footnotes or endnotes. The text of the essay must be double-spaced, with twelve-point font and one-inch margins. First Prize: $1000 in each of two divisions, Law Student or Masters/Doctoral Student. The first prize winners will also receive an invitation to publish in The Journal of American Arbitration or The World Arbitration and Mediation Report and the essays will be posted online at the Section of Dispute Resolution's website.
