PDF and ZIP file information

Adobe's Portable Document Format provides a superior printed copy and a more manageable saved file, for both PCs and Macs, when compared to a normal web page.  However, PDF documents require Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to be viewed and take longer to download.  If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you have the following options:

• If you are using this computer as part of a network, for example at college or work, ask your Network Administrator or IT Department to install the free program, Acrobat Reader, available from www.adobe.com or directly from the link below.
  
• If you are using a standalone computer, for example at home or work, you have two choices.  Acrobat Reader may be downloaded, free of charge, from www.adobe.com or directly from the link below.  Alternatively, it is usually provided on computer magazine cover disks.

Note: always print or save documents using the buttons on the Acrobat Reader toolbar rather than the Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator toolbar.  View the Acrobat Reader manual by selecting 'Help' once the program is running.

Zipped files are documents or files which have been compressed by a special utility program in order to take up less space on a floppy disc or to reduce internet download time.  Such compressed documents offered by, for example, the Lord Chancellor's Department and the Court Service, will require a decompression utility such as WinZip or PKzip in order to be opened and viewed.

WinZip 8.0 is also available as a free download from www.winzip.com.  It too is usually provided on computer magazine cover disks.  Alternatively, PKzip 4.0 available from www.pkware.com.

Note:

• Once installed, WinZip will create a new folder on your hard drive called 'unzipped'.  When you then double-click on a downloaded zip file, it will be decompressed and stored in a new folder within 'unzipped'.
• The original zipped file will still be wherever it was downloaded to (eg, the 'My Documents' folder) and can then be deleted if necessary.
• Always look in 'unzipped' for your uncompressed files.
